چکیده

The problem of scattering of linear internal waves from small compact sea bottom inhomogeneities is considered from the point of view of mode-to-mode scattering. A simple formula for modal conversion coefficients Cnm , quantifying the amount of energy that is scattered into the n-th mode from the incident field m-th mode, is derived. In this formula the representation of inhomogeneities by their expansions into the Fourier and Fourier-Bessel series with respect to angular and radial coordinates respectively are used. Results of calculations, performed in a simple model case, are presented. The obtained formula can be used for a formulation of the inverse problem, as it was done in the acoustic case [2, 3].

Scattering from elastic sea beds: first-order theory.

A perturbation model for high-frequency sound scattering from an irregular elastic sea bed is considered. The sea bed is assumed homogeneous on the average and two kinds of irregularities are assumed to cause scattering: roughness of the water-sea bed interface and volume inhomogeneities of the sediment mass density and the speeds of compressional and shear waves. The first-order small perturba...

Scattering of linear long-wave tsunamis due to randomly fluctuating sea-bottom topography: coda excitation and scattering attenuation

S U M M A R Y The scattering coefficient is one of the most fundamental parameters by which to quantify the scattering intensity for waves as a function of scattering angle and wave frequency. This study presents a derivation of the scattering coefficient for linear long-wave tsunami equations in randomly fluctuating sea-bottom topography using the first-order Born approximation. The scattering...

Internal tides near the Celtic Sea shelf break: a new look at a well known problem

Internal waves generated by tides in the Celtic Sea were investigated on the basis of in-situ data collected at the continental slope in July 2012, and theoretically using a weakly nonlinear theory and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology general circulation model. It was found that internal solitary waves generated over the shelf break and propagated seaward did not survive in the course ...

Scattering of surface waves over an uneven sea-bed

This work is concerned with the scattering of a train of progressive waves by a small undulation of the bottom of a laterally unbounded sea, using two-dimensional linear water wave theory. Assuming irrotational motion, a simplified perturbation analysis is employed to obtain the first-order corrections to the velocity potential by using the Green’s integral theorem in a suitable manner, and the...
